The once polarised hotel scene in Paris has been shaken awake. The old choice — megabucks palace with all the trimmings or rickety bolt hole with no lift — has been swept aside by a new breed of hideaway: the boutique hotel. These small, design-forward places, with fewer than 100 rooms, have mushroomed like… well, champignons, bringing their signature blend of polish, personality and relative affordability to areas that were once the preserve of either the ultra-chic or resolutely basic.

Among the best are sultry little sanctuaries in racy Pigalle, a sharply tailored belle époque home off the Champs-Élysées and even a hotel with its own recording studio. Other amenities might include a brasserie, a pool, a hot yoga studio or a rooftop bar. In short, there’s never been a more exciting time to check in at best boutique hotels in Paris.

1. Hôtel Observatoire Luxembourg, Jardin du Luxembourg

££ | Best for park life

Cross the street from this cosy hotel and you’ll be meandering the flower-filled parterres of the Luxembourg Garden, where folks laze on chairs in the shade, kids push wooden boats across the ponds and the Eiffel Tower soars beyond the treetops like a filigree arrowhead. It’s a sight for sore eyes, and a theme that L’Observatoire wholly embraces after its mega make-over and reopening in 2025. The ground floor — from the small lobby to its Le Luco brasserie — is rich leaf green, offset by bold patterns that echo garden trellis and rattan chairs. Simple rooms, in classy beige, green and mustard, are small but comfy. The What Matters organic bath products smell delicious.

2. Hôtel de Sers, Champs-Élysées

£££ | SPA | Best for old meets new world grandeur

In 1880, this classy little spot off the Champs-Élysées — with its typically Parisian mix of belle époque and art deco architecture — was the residence of the Marquis de Sers. Remnants of the era are visible in the grand period staircase, lined with 19th-century portraits. But the rest is a contemporary take on various vintages: the 52 rooms sport clean, art deco-esque curves that mix with plush fabrics of 1970s-style orange, brown and sage green. The posh restaurant (a great place to eat) feels straight out of a 1990s design magazine. And the veranda, with its vertical garden, looks very 2000s. It sounds like a hodgepodge, but under the designer Pascal Allaman’s skilful watch, it melds together with real style. A sauna and Calma Paris spa cap off the attractions.

3. Brach Paris, 16th arrondissement

£££ | SPA | POOL | Best for fitness fanatics

Laid-back luxury is the order of the day at this design-led hotel in the upscale 16th arrondissement, where well-heeled locals and guests linger in the central bar and restaurant. Housed in a former 1970s sorting centre, the subterranean gym and pool area is heaven for fitness and wellness enthusiasts, with a packed roster of spin and boxing classes as well as a 22m pool, a swish sauna and a Clarins spa.

4. Hôtel des Académies et des Arts, Left Bank

££ | Best for art lovers

If you’ve ever dreamt of being an artist in Paris, this Left Bank hotel (where Modigliani had a workshop on the top floor) is for you, as it’s themed entirely around art. Not only is it dotted with contemporary artworks, including a fabulous immersive piece in the lift shaft, but guests are also invited to use the drawing and painting materials in the lobby and take classes in conjunction with the neighbouring art school. The creative theme continues in the 20 unique bedrooms with bold drawings on the ceilings.

5. Hôtel Particulier Montmartre

£££ | Best for a country house feel in the heart of the city

Few areas in Paris pack as much charm per square metre as Montmartre, with its cobbled streets that climb the steep route up to the Sacré Coeur. This hotel (a proper celeb magnet) is hidden in its own private compound on the hillside off the ultra-chic Avenue Junot, one of the most captivating areas in the city. The former mansion house, once owned by the Hermès family, houses only five suites, each decorated differently, and you’ll really feel like a member of the French glitterati from times gone by.

6. MOB House, St Ouen

£ | POOL | Best for cool bohemian vibes on a modest budget

It’s not easy to find an affordable hotel room in Paris, let alone a very stylish one, but MOB House is an exception. It’s just outside northern Paris in the bohemian suburb of St Ouen, which is home four days a week to Europe’s largest antique market. Inside you’ll find industrial-chic rooms designed by Philippe Starck and a relaxed communal area with a bar, dining and co-working spaces. In the summer, locals come to share the outdoor space, including a pool. The sister MOB Hotel has rooms at a lower price point.

7. Hôtel Henriette, Gobelins

££ | Best for vintage design fans

This affordable pad strips back the bells and whistles to focus on service. Expect a friendly welcome and a generous breakfast buffet in the dining room or the flower-filled courtyard garden. Individually decorated bedrooms feature mid-century-style furniture and bold print wallpaper, and it’s located on a quiet Paris street with the lively Latin Quarter (and the Metro) minutes away on foot.

8. L’Hôtel, St Germain

£££ | POOL | Best for flâneurs

The place in which Oscar Wilde took his last breath (the ground floor) might be a ghoulish claim to fame, but L’Hôtel wears its literary heritage with style. This kitsch spot — one of Paris’s smallest five-stars — was once a modest guesthouse, but today its 20 rooms are decorated in opulent and eccentric style, courtesy of the designer Jacques Garcia. The hotel is right by the city’s prestigious Beaux Arts fine-art school, with dozens of independent galleries nearby on the Rue de Seine. The basement pool and hammam are an unexpected treat.

9. Hôtel HOY, Pigalle

££ | Best for a chic yoga retreat with vegan food

Fancy realigning your chakras on a foodie street extraordinaire? The beautifully designed HOY Hotel (founded by Franco-Mexican Charlotte Gomez de Orozco, with a name that stands for House of Yoga) sits in the heart of buzzy Pigalle, on Rue des Martyrs, a desperately cool market street, lined with restaurants, delis, cafés and bakeries. Fittingly, the hotel restaurant has one of the only gourmet vegan menus in town. Food for your soul comes in the form of an in-house hot yoga studio and guests can also take part in centring activities such as flower-arranging classes.

10. Hôtel Bourg Tibourg, Le Marais

££ | Best for old-school glamour

Jacques Garcia, the superstar designer known for his maximalist aesthetic and rich visual references, is behind the look of this Marais bolt hole. The pairing of baroque and Japanese furnishings sets the scene in the lobby, while rooms are a tasteful mix of colours, with dramatic bathrooms behind saloon doors.

11. Grands Boulevards Experimental, Sentier

££ | Best for modern cool

The bar and restaurant are at the heart of this design-led stay from the Experimental Group, known for its chic Paris bars. Order one of the house drinks (we recommend the Banana Spleen, made with bourbon and red vermouth) or head up to the Shed, the rooftop bar. Bedrooms are compact, although some have balconies and all are colourful thanks to a palette of browns, pinks and greens.

12. Terrass Hôtel, Montmartre

£ | SPA | Best for incredible views

A mansard roof and art nouveau awnings make the Terrass Hôtel an impressive sight on the southwest edge of Montmartre. Rooms range from classic to penthouse and all come with spacious bathrooms. Some have Eiffel Tower views; you’ll pay more for those, though. Alternatively, head to the hotel’s jewel in the crown — its roof terrace, where everyone gets the view and the glass-walled restaurant is perfect for romantic meals. Book in for a treatment with Nuxe at the spa or sign up for a power yoga class at weekends.

13. Grand Pigalle Experimental, SoPi (South Pigalle)

££ | Best for a classic boutique hotel experience

This dinky hotel in the heart of hip South Pigalle was one of Paris’s very first design-led boutique hotels and it’s still a hub for both local and visiting creative types. Food comes from the star chef Gregory Marchand (his restaurant Frenchie Pigalle is here) and consists of seasonal French fare and natural wines, including the obligatory pet nat and orange wines. Rooms blend the original features of the traditional Haussmann-style building and some more eccentric contemporary furnishings, such as leopard-print carpeting and art deco-style furniture. Night owls will appreciate the vibrant nightlife of the surrounding neighbourhood.

14. Hôtel de Lille, Left Bank

££ | Best for an elegant pied-à-terre

This small hotel has just 15 rooms and is next door to the Musée d’Orsay and moments from the Seine. The artistic heritage of the St Germain neighbourhood is referenced throughout, with bedrooms tastefully themed around cultural heroes including Simone de Beauvoir, Françoise Sagan and Miles Davis. The feel is refined but welcoming, with a fire in the lobby (in winter) and carefully chosen novels in the rooms. Families are welcome to use a dedicated two-bedroom suite under the eaves.

15. Le Roch Hôtel & Spa, Louvre-Pyramides

£££ | SPA | POOL | Best for honeymooners

The decor of this hotel is flamboyantly romantic — think velvet footstools, inky blue walls and brass light fittings. The 37 rooms are light-filled and full of plush, contemporary furnishings and there’s a spa with a pool, hammam and treatments using the Paris-based beauty brand Codage products (non-guests are welcome too). Close to the Jardin de Tuileries and Place Vendôme, the hotel is also within walking distance of the key sights.

16. Square Louvois, Opéra-Louvre

££ | POOL | Best for a peaceful urban haven

Square Louvois provides an exceptionally warm welcome and excellent facilities at a very competitive price. Rooms are contemporary and tastefully decorated with some charming period features such as exposed dark wood beams, subtly matching the Hungarian parquet in the lobby. The welcoming vibe is continued with the daily complimentary tea of fresh cakes with tea and hot chocolate. There’s also a swimming pool (just) big enough for lengths in the relaxation area in the building’s stone cellar. The Louvre and Palais Garnier opera house are within a short walking distance.

17. French Theory, St Germain

££ | Best for music lovers

The arty credentials of this modern hotel go beyond the superficial. It houses a subterranean recording studio, and the owner works with music labels to house artists for residential recording retreats. The hotel also has its own coffee shop, as well as a shop featuring hand-picked vinyl, local artworks and dried flower arrangements. Stylish, stripped-back rooms feature a “cultural minibar” of books and music, as well as top-quality Bang & Olufsen speakers. Handily, you’ll find the galleries and bookshops of St Germain-des-Prés and the Latin Quarter on the doorstep.

19. Hôtel du Temps, Poissonnière

££ | Best for a stay near Gare du Nord

The built-up area around the Eurostar terminus is not the most charming, but walk ten minutes southwest along Rue La Fayette and you’ll find this dinky stay. The whitewashed rooms are furnished with vintage furniture, and the bar and breakfast areas are decorated in leafy greens. Order cocktails à deux at the bar or linger in the morning before venturing out to explore.

19. Nolinski, Opéra-Louvre

£££ | SPA | POOL | Best for a romantic break

This modern luxury hotel could hardly be more centrally located — positioned between the glimmering Palais Garnier and the Louvre — and yet it manages to maintain an atmosphere of discreet seclusion thanks to swish but tasteful decor and top-notch soundproofing. Rooms range from petite bedrooms to large, opulent suites, with plush beds and gleaming marble-clad bathrooms in every option. Excellent seasonal brasserie fare is on offer at the art deco-inspired restaurant, while the hotel is admirably free of single-use plastic. The subterranean pool and spa are highlights.

20. Hôtel Adèle & Jules, Grands Boulevards

££ | Best for the personal touch

In the busy Grands Boulevards district, Adèle & Jules is housed across two charming 19th-century buildings. It’s run by a hands-on owner who puts a lot of thought into creating a welcoming experience — there’s a small gym and free afternoon tea with hot drinks and cakes. Cosy classic rooms face the courtyard; ask for one on the ground floor with a private terrace. Family rooms with baby cots are also available.

21. Caron de Beaumarchais, Le Marais

£ | Best for a quaint trip to times gone by

In a globalised world where hotels can look the same from one corner of the world to another, there is something refreshing and delightful about the Caron de Beaumarchais, designed by Alain Bigeard. An enthusiast of the playwright Beaumarchais, the proprietor has painstakingly themed the whole hotel around the 18th century, with a lobby transformed into an ancien régime drawing room. The old-school styling continues into the rooms. Its location is excellent, right in the buzzy Marais district with its lively café terraces, bars and boutiques.

22. Mandarin Oriental Lutetia

£££ | SPA | POOL | Best for grand Parisian history

Originally opened as a pied-à-terre for the suppliers of the grand Le Bon Marché department store, which is still its elegant neighbour, this five-star palace hotel has been the backdrop to every layer of modern Paris history. Ultra-deluxe rooms have high-end amenities, marble-clad bathrooms and — in many cases — Eiffel Tower views. Its brassiere terrace (ideal for people-watching) and the buzzy cocktail spot Bar Joséphine are as popular among Parisians as they are with visitors. Afternoon tea here is an institution. And you could do worse than to unwind in the spa, with its 17m pool and hydrotherapy pool.

23. Fauchon L’Hôtel, Madeleine

££ | SPA | Best for those with a sweet tooth

The Fauchon company has been a purveyor of posh teas, biscuits and macarons since the 19th century. And this spot, on Paris’s eminent Place de la Madeleine, used to be its flagship shop. Its bestselling macarons still make appearances at check-in, with every guest whisked from the foyer into the plush parlour for a plate of meringue confections and a welcome cocktail. The brassy decor, accented with lashings of hot pink (a nod to its rosy confectionary packaging) gives this Haussmann manor the air of a girl’s weekend retreat — a bit of a tired trope. Yet it does aim to spoil. Staff are unusually warm, with zero pretension. And at a third of the price of its neighbours, the Ritz and Crillon among them, you do feel you’re getting away with something.

24. Hôtel Bachaumont, Sentier

£ | SPA | Best for quality nightcaps

This beautiful design hotel is centrally located, in one of Paris’s coolest neighbourhoods for shopping, bars and restaurants, and near the art deco cinema Le Grand Rex. The bar menu offers a selection of house cocktails while the wine list is exclusively French and a street-facing restaurant has inviting banquettes. Upstairs are 49 rooms inspired by the style of the 1920s, with light parquet flooring.
